A day in Cologne (Köln)

Cologne (Köln) was our introduction to Gothic architecture—the magnificent Kölner Dom or Cologne cathedral.
We took the train from Amsterdam to Cologne and as soon as we exited the Köln Hauptbahnhof station the Kolner Dom/ Cologne cathedral was our first sight. Though the cathedral looks very old (its construction started sometime in the 12th century) and dull, its intrinsic details and the two towering, majestic spires makes it impressive.

It is possible to take the stairs to the top of the tower.
Touring the church is forbidden during mass.

We strolled in the Cologne downtown and Hohenzollern Bridge over the river Rhine. The fence on this bridge has love-locks of all shapes, sizes, and colors. I even found one with my name 🙂 The view from the other side of the bridge is beautiful.

Coming to food, we had the typical Cologne beer called “Kölsch” and Schweinshaxe (grilled pork legs) along with buttery potatoes. Need I say how good it was? 🙂

(We only had a day to spend in the city of Cologne in March)
